GM Recalls 1.5 Million Cars, Prepares for Bankruptcy
General Motors will conduct a massive recall of 1.5 million cars in May while preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Six models, among three makes under the GM brand, spanning seven years of manufacture are being recalled due to a risk of engine compartment fire, according to the National Highway Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation.
The models being recalled include the 1997-2003 Buick Regal, the 2000-2003 Chevrolet Impala, the 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina, the 1998-2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue and the 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix.
The New York Times reported on Monday that the Treasury Department is urging GM to prepare to file for bankruptcy on June 1, rather than reorganizing out of court before its 60-day deadline extension on the provisional $13.4 billion federal loans granted in December.
In that Times article, former GM President and current GM CEO Fritz Henderson (pictured) has been giving "increasingly clear signals that bankruptcy is probable," since replacing former GM CEO Rick Wagoner, who was pressured out of office by the Obama Administration for failing to effectively restructure the company before the original March 31 deadline.

Massive recall, or massive marketing scam?
I find it rather odd, that GM has (all of a sudden) announced a recall of 1.5 million vehicles. I've never herd one word mentioned by either the news media or GM, that any of the mentioned vehicles has caught fire due to an oil leak. It seems to me GM has come up with this recall, that I call a marketing plan, just to get consumers into a GM dealership. While the mechanic is checking out your vehicle, I'm sure a salesmen will be more then happy to escort you through the showroom, and the mechanic will most likely advise you, your older vehicle may not have an oil leak. Or the oil leak covered under a recall warranty. However, is in need of expensive servicing and other repairs. This is just another marketing tactic by GM.

Why the hell would a major auto company recall cars for marketing? Don't you think this would, if anything, take away from future sales? Use your head.

If you want to know about these cars that are catching fire ...go to the edmunds forum for pontiac.....there are so many stories of people's cars that caught fire and burned to the ground....I get new emails everyday that another car has caught fire...my grand prix, caught fire in july ....two fire units responded put out the fire and cut the battery line and electrical wires....a private investigator came to inspect the car twice...then, I received a letter from gm my car would not be covered because it did not have a warranty and it would be against gm's policy to compensate me for my loss. my car had 125,000 miles on it. and nothing wrong with it.....total loss...car was paid for.....beautiful car and fully loaded....I had to have the wrecking company come and get it....there is no way it could be fixed....the fire ruined everything...erica in calif.....

You are not alone ..... my neighbor owns a vehicle of that era and, as soon as he heard about a recall, he traded it in. For a new Toyota.

Perhaps the liablity of thier basic fleet line up models 1.5 million is a huge liablity. Announcing the recall before the majority of cars could get checked prior to June 1 filing could possibly let them off the hook on the liability. Either way it will hurt the GM drivers. All warranties could be negated as well.

GM has had so many recalls that I lost count. It must be in the high hundreds if not thousands. Is it any wonder GM has lost market share over the last 25 years?
I still have my doubts GM can make a vehicle that is not in the garage as often as the current offerings. GM has had gasket problems in the past. Look at the
V-6 engines that failed because the coolent leaked into the oil pan. Other leaks of oil and coolent have been recalled as well. GM is desperate now. I have my doubts that even if the UAW worked for half the wages they do now, and the bondholders accepted pennies on the dollar that GM can turn a profit to pay the taxpayers back and gain market share. I no longer own GM stock.

I will Never, Never, Never, Never, Never but a GM car if Obama or the Govt gives money to the UAW or GM to bailout the pension plans or healthcare plans of the UAW, or to continue paying them while GM is going through bankruptcy. I am not alone..........

All of you GM haters just STFU! I have owned 3 GM cars and they have all been super reliable. Does anyone remember last year when toyota recalled a bunch of their trucks due to the bodies rusting out? All cars have problems, period. GM products are very well built, my 1989 Chevy is still going strong and my 2007 Chevy has needed zero work except for oil changes. The ONLY thing causing the problem with the US auto industry is TRAITORS WHO BUY JAPANESE HEAPS!

I totally agree with you. We have owned 8 GM vehicles, and had no major problems with any of them. I now own a Buick LeSabre, which I absolutely love. You people who think that "foreign" cars are better never paid attention to the fact that when a "foreign" car was recalled, it was on page 8, while American recalls were on page one and were headline news for days. And I believe that the Unions were at the heart of the GM downfall. When they were striking for outrageous pay and benefits, they gave the foreign companies an opening, market share lost and never regained. They killed the golden goose.

i will never buy a japanese car. that said, i am still looking for a good lease on a H3 like they had lst year. for all the talk about hurting, i still dont see any real bargains. all they offer are watered down vehicles, with nothing in them. same for ford

People buy foreign cars for several very good reasons-- resale value, and dependability among them. Moreover, most 'foreign' cars are chiefly made in the USA unlike the out-sourced pieces of crap the American car builders are selling us. Screw'm... they failed. Let new corporations be formed out of their skeletons.
