Help Us Find the 17 'Socialists' in Congress
The witch hunt has begun.
Channeling Joseph McCarthy, one of Alabama's Republican congressmen declared Thursday that no fewer than 17 socialists are roaming the corridors of the House of Representatives.
"Some of the men and women I work with in Congress are socialists," said Rep. Spencer Bachus at a Birmingham breakfast. When asked to clarify his comments, he said he knows of 17 socialist House members, The Birmingham News reported.
This statement lets us know two things about Bachus: He believes there are socialist members of Congress, and he doesn't think socialism is very good.
But, wanting to keep the big secret to himself, he didn't give any names. So, it's time to dust off the old shoe leather and do some investigative reporting. Where can we find a group of 17 socialists on Capitol Hill seeking to undermine the American way? I did some gumshoe digging through congressional groups and found two subcommittees with exactly 17 members. Coincidence?
The first is the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry, a division of the Agriculture Committee. But one of the members is Mike Rogers, one of Bachus's fellow Republicans from Alabama, and it's unlikely that Bachus would want to implicate a like-minded politician. So scratch that.
The other one I found was the Subcommittee on Homeland Security, part of the powerful Appropriations Committee. Now we're talking. No chickens and yogurt for these 17 policymakers; we're talking ballistic missiles and heavy-armor tanks, just the sort of thing a group of socialists would want to mess with. But unfortunately, a Google News search for "Subcommittee on Homeland Security + socialists" returns hardly anything. Seeing as that is the extent of my investigative capabilities, I was resigned.
Of course, it's entirely possible that the 17 socialists whom Bachus knows about are interspersed in clandestine ways among Congress's 435 House members. Well, 434 -- assuming that Bachus, the top Republican on the Financial Services Committee, does not suspect himself of being a socialist.
Or does he? A staple of socialism is controlling the media and the flow of information. The more censorship, the better for socialist leaders wanting to shape public opinion. Knowing that, take a look at Bachus's website, similar to the other websites kept by all members of Congress. When I tried to find out Bachus's recent committee news -- in "Committee News" under the "Press Room" tab -- I was greeted with this charming message:
"Not Found
The requested URL was not found on this server."
Now, hold on to your subpoenas, Justice Department officials. That broken link appears to lead not to Bachus's main page, but instead to something called "republicans.financialservices.house.gov." Now all we have to do is figure out who those guys are, and we're on our way to finding some answers.

Only 17? Since nearly half of Americans in a recent poll thought socialism was better capitalism, it's time for Congressmen to get with the program or face not being elected. Just kidding, but you get my drift. Like FDR before him, Obama is trying to salvage capitalism in America. But the rightwingers are such sore losers and blind sighteded, they can't see this anymore than they did in FDR's day.

It would be more difficult to find 17 members of Congress who are NOT socialists. Other than a handful, they are only interested in the expansion of their own power and wealth at our expense. A pox on just about the entire bunch!
"These men (in government), in point of fact, are seldom if ever moved by anything rationally describable as public spirit; there is actually no more public spirit among them than among so many burglars or street-walkers."

Jim. He wants to save capitalism? Really? I must ask you even know what socialism is? But he wants the government to be able to take over companies. That is socialism. He wants the government to control health care. That is socialism. He wants to redistribute wealth. Again, that is socialism. I don't think Obama has done anything yet, that is in line with a free market economy.

Socialism is Progressive Taxation and Government Control of Important Industry...Does the Federal Government own Controlling Stock in GM? they gave it a loan just as many of us have received a loan for a house or car or washing machine...simply put, if you like obama or not or have no clear implication of what socialism is (like my vaguely intelligent friend steve) you know that we have been a mixed capitalist/socialist country for a while, and the so-called democratic socialists that slayer2259 has called out, have done more to strengthen capitalism the any other party examples: The New Deal (FDR-Democrat) helped stimulate jobs and brought us out of a depression (along with a global war, The Marshall Plan helped increase demand for American good abroad, creating a stable decade (Truman-Democrat), The Great Society Programs made it more flexible to open up businesses with government assistance and helped give more flexibility to corporations in terms of benefits to employees, and lets not forget pres. clinton, who left office with a surplus.....Yea you're right, those democrats sound like socialists...especially obama who is helping people keep a house, putting people to work, building highways, funding technology, keeping at least 3 million people in work thanks to his loans to Gm and Chrysler...yea socialist

Funny how you basically agreed with me, but didn't want to say it. I never said the government owned the automakers in terms of equity, but they own them in terms of control. Obama forced Wagoner out of his job, not the stockholders. He also wants legistlation to provide the federal government with the right to take over companies they deem necessary to the economy. That is a concrete communist/socialist ideal. Before you get your panties in a bunch, communism is a subset of socialsim in that it is based directly on socialism. Plus it is vague in that it leaves out who makes the determination and what necessary means. And I am curious as to how came to the conclusions you did. The New Deal tripled government expenditures as a % of GDP and many economists agree that it did not provide many major benifts in comparison to it's cost. Marshall was a Democrat in name only and clearly had a capitalistic mindset. Not to mention that economic output of all participating countries had already exceeded pre-war levels. He clearly was not a socialist. Clinton taxed the hell out of everyone and unlike Obama didn't significantly increase government spending. Obama making hardworking people pay for houses they do not live in. Most of the loans given in creation of this mess are directly linked to Democrats. Banks were forced to provide loans to unqualified applicants. Add in the idiots who bought more house than they could afford and you have the current situation in which we are rewarding stupidity. Bailing out car companies which will probably be in bankruptcy before the year is up is stupid. I don't want a GM or Chrysler made vehicle, so why should I have to pay for it. If GM and Chrysler stay around they will just be grabbing at our wallets forever without providing us anything in return.

435 capitalists are in Congress, folks. Capitalists. Yes, this is what capitalism looks like--it's OK if you don't like it, but it shouldn't be confused with socialism.

With Rep. Spencer Bachus and Rep.Michele Bachmann the republicans have the keys to lose election after election. The majority of Americans do not appreciate this level of silliness in a leader. Are all the republicans left holding office mentally deficient? Doesn't the conduct of these Congress people embarris republicans or are they just totally out of their minds?
