Turns Out Palin Doesn't Know Who Canada's PM Is

About a week ago, I proposed two questions that journalists should ask Sarah Palin before the election: 1. Who is Canada's prime minister? and 2. Can you find Iraq on a map?

Well, a couple of Canadian comedians took my cue and prank called the Alaska governor, catching her and her staff off guard. The caller, pretending to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy, asked Palin about her relations with "the prime minister of Canada, Steph Carse." Canada's prime minister is Stephen Harper. But Palin didn't pick up on that.

"Well, he's doing fine too, and yeah, when you come into a position underestimated it gives you an opportunity to prove the pundits and the critics wrong," Palin said. "You work that much harder."

Carse, by the way, is a Canadian singer. And Canada, by the way, shares a pretty big border with Alaska.

Realizing they'd been punk'd, Palin's staffers quickly issued a tongue-in-cheek response saying Palin is honored to have reached head-of-state status.

Well, she's 0 for 1. The Canadians are apparently reading Bright Hall -- so how about you Iraqis? Grab a blank map of the Middle East and ask Palin where your home country is.

The crank call was good for a laugh, but also iced the cake of Palin's mishaps in interviews since Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric laid the smack on her with questions ranging from the bailout to the Bush doctrine.

In the call, Palin also revealed that she thinks Quebec is a country worthy of its own prime minister. When the faux Sarkozy asked if Palin had seen "the prime minister of Quebec" on the trail, Palin responded: "I haven't seen him at one of the rallies, but it's been great working with the Canadian officials in my role as governor."

Canadian provinces, or fake states, don't have prime ministers -- just like how Alaska doesn't have a president.

Or so we think.
