Palin 'Reads' The Economist, but Ignores Global Warming?

Whenever I meet pretentious New England liberals up here in Boston, and they ask me what I read, I always try to impress them. The New York Times. The New Yorker. The Economist.

Wait, The Economist? Do I read that overly-intelligent weekly magazine? Well, I have, a couple times. And by read I mean I glanced at it on a newsstand. But everyone lies about reading The Economist, because it makes you sound really smart and aware.

So you can imagine my surprise when Sarah Palin told Fox News this week that she reads The Times, The Economist and The Wall Street Journal. (Katie Couric asked her a few days ago what she reads, and Palin couldn't name a single news publication. A week later, though, advisers may have helped her recollect exactly what has been "in front of her.")

"I read the same things that other people across the country read, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and The Economist and some of these publications that we've recently even been interviewed through up there in Alaska," Palin recited.

Hm. I wonder if Palin read the Economist's Aug. 1 piece on global warming's devastating effects. Probably not. When Couric asked her what she believes is causing global warming, she said, "But kind of doesn't matter at this point, as we debate what caused it."

OK, she missed an issue. No biggie -- that was before she was tapped as John McCain's running mate anyway. But in last week's debate, Palin again asserted a false claim that Barack Obama wants to raise taxes on families making $42,000 a year. I guess she missed this article on that issue, too.

Governor, are you really reading The Economist? Or do you just know what it is? I'm pretty sure economists even lie about reading The Economist.

Now, I'm not debating that you read The Times. You were probably thrilled that the newspaper of record printed a story Friday detailing Obama's relationship with 1960s radical William Ayers, even though the article ultimately shows there is no evidence that the two have crossed paths in significant ways at all. But don't let that stop you from making up what the article is about.

"Our opponent, though, is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin alleged Saturday, citing the front-page story. "America needs to know this."

Hey, I wonder if Palin read this Times story about how she abused her power as governor of Alaska. But I guess she would deride that as "mainstream media gotcha journalism."
