Fox News Making Obama Look Darker?

Matt Negrin

Would you be surprised if I told you that Fox News, the alleged "news organization" you can always turn to for complete coverage of President Bush's birthday, may be airing images of Barack Obama that make his skin look darker than it really is?

One Denver Westward blogger doesn't think that's very far-fetched, reading a lot into Fox's use of pictures in this story and elsewhere. Remember, this isn't the first time Fox flacks have doctored photos (or used very specific selection methods) to make people they don't like look bad. There's reason to be suspicious, though we're certainly not in TIME/O.J. territory here.

We're in an election that is supposed to be beyond race, that can be about where the real people want to take this country, but unfortunately race doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.

And it may become an even bigger factor on election day.

Rebecca Curtis of the liberal Huffington Post hypothesizes that Obama will lose the election because most white people who say they will vote for him will have last-second changes of heart in the voting booths. Tabbed the "Bradley effect" after a black Los Angeles mayor who lost California's gubernatorial race despite tremendous leads in polls, the social phenomenon has only one remedy for Obama, says Curtis: Hillary Clinton as a running mate.

Yeah, right.

There are about a million reasons why Obama won't run with Clinton. But more importantly, the whole Bradley effect thing is striking, as the Post points out:

1989: A black lieutenant governor of Virginia squeaks by with a win in the gubernatorial race by half a point after enjoying a nine-point lead ahead of a white Republican.

1989: A black mayoral candidate has an 18-point edge over a white Republican (Rudy Giuliani), and only wins by 2 points.

1990: A black Democrat running for Senate in North Carolina is seen winning by 4 to 6 points, but loses to a white Republican by 6 points.

The number flops are apparently caused by white voters lying in polls so they don't seem racist. Others plan on voting for the black candidate up until they push the button, but have a panic attack behind the curtain and go with the safe pick -- whitey.

At least with Fox News, it's a little easier to know where things stand.
