Fox's Doctored Photos Are a Disgrace to Photoshop

Matt Negrin

Fox News yesterday altered two New York Times reporters' photos to make them look bad, and the only thing worse than that is how awful the images actually are.

Take a look for yourself, courtesy of the liberal-leaning Media Matters for America:

Yeah, it's a disgrace to journalism. And sure, we probably don't really expect a lot ethically from Fox News in the first place. But couldn't they have at least asked a graphics intern to do the hit job instead of a producer's 8-year-old kid who just learned how to use Microsoft Paint?

Here's the background: Times reporter Jacques Steinberg wrote a story about how Fox News' ratings aren't as secure as they once were as CNN and MSNBC raked in viewers for political coverage of the primary season.

In response, two so-called journalists at Fox News named Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade aired the hilariously and clearly doctored photos of Steinberg and his editor, Steven Reddicliffe, that elongate their faces and ears and yellow their teeth, among other clever alterations.

The Times culture editor, Sam Sifton, said the changed images were "disgusting." That's a pretty modest assessment of the worst Photoshop job I've seen since TIME maybe tried to make O.J. Simpson look blacker.

Or should we chalk this one up with the time Newsday edited these two star skaters together on the ice? Or how about John Kerry appearing with Jane Fonda in a photo that never happened?

If you're going to attack the Times, fine. But do it with credibility, and not with the spray-paint tool.
